New England Encounter

Post by Chris…his first one :)

Turning off I-95, we ended up on a few windy back roads on our way to Newport, RI, this past weekend. After passing by trees, a nursery, trees, and more trees, we passed a small building on the side of the road with a simple sign out front advertising “BOOKS, old postcards.” Being a sucker for old books and an even bigger sucker for old postcards, I was tempted to pull right into its parking lot and have a look around. Not wanting to be late, we had to pass it by and continue on to Newport for our assignment that day.

On the way back home, a light rain started to fall when again we passed by unassuming building on the side of the road. We stepped in and were immediately hit with the smell of old books. Musty and earthy, the kind of smell that reminds you of elementary school, card catalogs, and learning about the Dewey Decimal System. Books were everywhere, even stacked up in places that seemed temporary at first but eventually became permanent.

The real find, however, was through a little doorway in the back. Behind the counter, we could see an older gentleman tapping away at his laptop with a small stack of postcards strewn about in front of him. We stepped through into a small curio shop with shelves lined with old Life magazines, model trains, postcards, and other bits of Americana. We pulled up to his counter like patrons at a local bar and he greeted us and asked us what we were interested in. Being the consummate Californian, I asked if he had any old postcards from the Golden State, and sure enough he had 3 binders full of them.

While flipping through the pages, we found out his name was Sandy and that he was a retired educator who found great satisfaction turning his hobby into a business. He also owned the building we were in and the bookstore was its other tenant. His expertise was Rhode Island, and mine California, so in spite of my short 28 years of life, I managed to tell stories about the postcards that came into his collection.

We ended up spending close to an hour looking through old postcards and talking shop. Turns out he was a NY Giants fan before they became my SF Giants, and he then happily sold me his copy of a 1958 Life magazine chronicling their move west. He rang us up for the magazine and a few choice postcards on an antique cash register and with a resounding ring, we reluctantly said our goodbyes and dashed back to the car, still very excited with our finds.

We got back on the road, and past the trees, fields, and nursery, found our way back to the interstate and headed home with our newfound little pieces of history tucked away safely.

Random Facts, part 2

April 9, 2012

Posted in personal

Happy Easter Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend with family and friends. We’ve been watching Juno and Daisy for the past few days…what do you get when you dogsit a 1-year-old whippet and a 14.5-year-old one? Hilarity, that’s what! Daisy is a HUGE BUNDLE of energy, and Juno kind of just trots around trying to keep up. Juno is deaf so not much phases her, but Daisy is still in that skittish puppy stage, so anything loud makes me jump (like my sneeze…oops).

Anywho, it’s time for another round of random facts!

  1. I can’t stand anything cherry or grape. Blame it on Cherry Grape Dimetapp– who decided that making a CHERRY GRAPE cough syrup was a good idea?!
  2. Strawberry Starbursts are my least favorite, but I’m okay with the cherry ones. Go figure.
  3. Excessive amounts of water on my face freaks me out. I wash my face in really quick spurts…and make sure I’m still breathing in between.
  4. Herb-roasted chicken is one of my favorite weeknight dinners. It’s not quick (takes about an hour), but it’s definitely easy– perfect when I have stuff to do. Let me know if you want the recipe ;)
  5. I studied abroad in Korea in 2005, during my junior year of college. BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE, hands down. We even got to take a tour of Panmunjom, which is on the border of North and South Korea. Technically, I was in North Korea for a few minutes. :P
  6. My top three favorite cities are San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City, though I don’t think I could live in any of them. I’m much more comfortable in the ‘burbs.
  7. Bunnies scare the bejeezus out of me…which means most things about Easter scare me.
  8. I don’t like touching my food…and I can pick chicken and oxtails clean off the bone with a spoon and fork. (Evidence here)
  9. Long car rides either a) make me carsick, or b) make me sleepy. Good thing Chris likes to drive!
  10. I’m on the fence about Canon and Nikon (currently using both!).

Have a great Monday!

Living in a shoebox or two

March 26, 2012

Whenever I have to pack, I start looking through things and get totally distracted. This weekend, I started looking through my hard drives full of photos and found photos from our first two apartments in Philly! Show & tell time :)

First, a little bit of background info: the building we lived in used to be a hotel in the 20s and was eventually converted to an apartment building. The building was then converted again and the units were sold as condos. I refer to it as an “apartment” because…well, I have this idea that condos should at least have bedrooms. :P

I mentioned in my last post that we first lived in a 325-square-foot studio– Chris was starting school and I hadn’t been hired for my job yet, so we figured it would be better for him to get a place that wasn’t too big & expensive. Well, literally a week after he signed the lease, I got hired! We moved in a building that was right up against a hotel’s parking structure. The lights in the parking structure were so bright that it looked like it was 7am 24 hours a day (you don’t realize this when you’re checking out the apartment during the day). We couldn’t sleep, so rather than buying heavy blackout curtains and drilling huge holes into the wall, we opted for a solution that would have made MacGyver proud (or not): foil! The problem with this was that now we had no idea what time it was or what the weather was like. But shoot, would you rather get sleep or know it’s raining?!

Also pictured is our kitchen. Come to think of it, I’m not quite sure how I cooked in this– I made some of my best creations in this kitchen! You can use the plastic bag and paper towel holder as reference to how small it was ;) And please excuse the full trashcan…I took the photo when we were moving out.

As if the apartment wasn’t dreary enough, I took both photos above with my old iPhone 3G. Although, it was pretty new at the time! :P

Finally, we moved to a better apartment– same building, but on the 15th floor, overlooking Old City and New Jersey. It was great! The owner fixed it up, and the best part was, it was a whopping 25 square feet more! We felt like we hit the jackpot.

I decided to do this apartment justice by busting out the fancy camera + wide angle lens. Since you all know wide angle lenses distort like nuts, here are a few reference points:

Photo #1: The bed is a double bed. Pay attention to the rice cooker in the bottom left corner.
Photo #2: Note the heater in the bottom right.

Now…notice where the rice cooker and heater are in the photo. (I can become a real estate photographer now– this place looks HUGE)

Whenever we tell people the size of our first two apartments, they never believe us! Usually, their master bedroom is bigger than the second apartment, no joke. It was a nice challenge as a newly married couple– throw a grad student and newly employed person across the country, stick ‘em in a studio meant for one person, and see how they fare. To be honest, we didn’t mind it. It was cozy…at least until our stuff started outgrowing the space and we really needed to move to a bigger apartment.

So, newlyweds, if we can live in these shoeboxes for two years, TRUST ME– you can get through anything! And think of all the fun & interesting “in myyyyy day” stories you’ll have for your future kids :)

Happy Monday, everyone!

Our next move

March 21, 2012

I apologize for the lack of blogging in over a month! But we’ve been preparing for something big…

It’s no secret that Chris and I LOVE our home state of California and can’t wait to get back. After being in Philadelphia for nearly four years, we’ve gotten quite homesick. And I miss the weather…I grew up in San Diego, the land of 80-degrees-over-Christmas-break and 59-degrees-is-freezing. ;)

It’s been a great experience here, nevertheless. Having lived in California for most of our lives, we decided the time to explore another part of the country was as newlyweds with no mortgage and no children– just the pursuit of a graduate degree and the pursuit of a dream. Philly will hold a special place in my heart– it was where we first lived as a married couple, in a 325-square-foot studio that butted up against a hotel parking structure. It was so bright during the night that we had to cover the windows with foil. :)

And now, after four years of pharmacy school and one crazy residency match process, I’m so, SO proud to announce that Chris has matched to a hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area!

We are incredibly excited to move back to the west coast to be closer to family (and hopefully start our own in the next year or so!), and while picking up our business and moving it across the country will be challenging, I’m so looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to meeting amazing photographers in Nor Cal– let’s hang out, because I’d love to buy you lunch or a cup of coffee!

California, we’re coming home! I can’t wait to see your shiny happy face in June.

Walk Through a Wedding recap

February 15, 2012

Posted in personal,photography

This past weekend, I attended a two-day workshop called Walk Through a Wedding. It was hosted by Justin & Mary, who are some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. Not only did they welcome us into their home, they shared their vast amounts of knowledge openly and honestly. It’s very rare to have people in our industry do that, but there are those rare gems like J&M who love with their whole hearts…and they want to see everyone succeed.

I met some awesome people this weekend, and I discovered my Why. We pushed ourselves to try something we’ve been scared to try (for example, experimenting with off-camera lighting– something you don’t have the luxury of learning on the fly at a wedding!). I had some horrible shots, but once I finally nailed it, I was so happy. I do, however, need to work on photographing a glass perfume bottle…that was tough! ;)

Here are some images with the “Buckles & Burberry” theme. Props to Julia for setting these up…it was so much fun to photograph the details! I also need to give a shout out to Spring & Silas, our models for the day. We had to practice posing them, which I’m sure gave them a good run for their own wedding day! :)

A hidden M! (This set up was basically in the darkest corner of the barrel room in the vineyard…I didn’t notice the M until the flash fired ;))

How HOT were Spring & Silas?!

If you’re a photographer and get the chance to attend a WTAW workshop, I HIGHLY recommend it! While yes, your head will feel like it’s going to explode from the sheer amount of information you get, you learn so many valuable things not only for your photography, but for your business as well.

…and I’m off to photograph a glass perfume bottle! ;)

The Why

February 13, 2012

Posted in personal

This weekend, I attended the first 2012 Walk Through a Wedding workshop hosted by the fabulous Justin & Mary. It ROCKED MY WORLD. Although, I have to admit that I was pretty intimidated because it was my first workshop, and workshops are supposed to make you bare your soul, admit to your mistakes, and most importantly, try something new, fail, and then TRY again.

And that is exactly what happened. As much as it hurt to realize the mistakes I’ve made in building my business, it was also very refreshing that I wasn’t alone. That WE weren’t alone. From seasoned pros to those of us just starting out, the 18 of us bonded over learning and pushing ourselves to try and make mistakes and then try again. Eighteen of us, with different backgrounds, different “whys,” different influences…and we were all there for one common goal: to become better photographers.

One of my favorite parts (and I had many!) was the beginning of the second day. Mary asked us, “What does photography mean to you?” It got me thinking WHY I love shooting weddings, why I love shooting people. It isn’t the “glory” or “fame” you get as wedding photographer…it isn’t about that. For me, it’s about capturing those fleeting moments in between the big events. The moments that otherwise would have been forgotten if not for that photograph freezing that particular moment in time. The moments that, collectively, make up real life.

When Chris picked me up (we were heading to NYC to celebrate the last few hours of his birthday at Ippudo– noodles for long life!), I was talking a mile a minute. Talking so fast that I was breathless and nearly forgetting what I had to say because I had SO MUCH to tell him. Talking so fast that I’m fairly certain certain parts didn’t make sense because my brain was going way faster than my mouth. He soaked it all in, quietly nodding, holding my hand, with the car radio turned down low. When I said all that I could and finally took a few seconds to sort through my thoughts, I asked him what was his Why, what made him want to photograph weddings and people.

“It’s capturing those fleeting moments in between,” he said, not even pausing to think about it.

I couldn’t believe it– his Why is the same as mine. And we’ve never explicitly asked ourselves why we do what we do. That fire in my soul– my husband not only understands that, but he encourages me to keep it burning. He is the wood to my bonfire. It was then that I realized that we were meant to do this; we were working for the same Why, without even knowing it. But now, we’ll continue working for the same Why…together.

Just a quick sneak peek of this weekend– I’m still reeling from it, but stay tuned for some more images! ;)

My favorite kind of comfort food

January 30, 2012

Posted in food,personal

After having spent a weekend mostly lying in bed, recovering from the remnants of my horrible cough & cold, I had a really strong craving for ramen. Not the instant kind, but specifically tonkotsu ramen. The kind that makes you feel like you’re being tucked into a warm cashmere blanket by your mommy. The kind that makes anything and everything instantly better, especially when your throat is raw from coughing so much.

In this case, being sick not only made me crave ramen, it made me crave the best I’ve had on the east coast: Ippudo in NYC.

And it made me wish I get better pronto so we could take a trip to the city to get a bowl, with a side of pork buns.

Happy Monday folks! Here’s to making it through the rest of winter in good health and good spirits :)

Bloopers

January 25, 2012

Posted in personal

I love it when movies have blooper reels at the end, especially in Rush Hour with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Priceless!

Likewise, I love it when I’m going through images from a shoot and find a bunch of hilarious outtakes. These don’t usually make it on the blog, but it always gives us a good chuckle. I found out during Christine and Christian’s shoot that photos with pets = a ton of bloopers. Here are my favorites!

This started off normal…Kenji and Mochi were behaving and actually looking at the camera! Then…Mochi got distracted and started licking Kenji. Oh, dogs…

Kenji did NOT want to pose…in fact, he was so interested in running around that he actually BUSTED OUT OF HIS COLLAR.

…………yeah.

After Christian got him to calm down and brought him back, he proceeded to act cute and lick Christine’s face off.

Don’t worry Kenji, you’re SUPER cute! How could you not love a face like this?!

After moving to the UNLV Library, we realized it wasn’t just pets that made photos funny. We told Christine to reach up while Christian crouched down. It wasn’t until later we noticed it looked like Christian was Tebowing:

Happy Wednesday!
