Reflections on Vegas

January 18, 2012

Posted in personal

The lights. The energy. The sounds. The smell of cigarette smoke winding its way lazily around people betting their hard-earned money. The soft clink of casino chips against each other as a lady pushes a stack across the table, betting it all on black. The tinkling of a slot machine as its reels turn, its spinner is holding his breath in the hopes of hitting the jackpot. The pounding bass barely contained in the walls of the club.

I’m in Vegas and I’m not feeling it.

But let me clarify. I don’t like the stereotypical Vegas. You know, the kind you see on tv and movies with all its glitz, glamour, and Ocean’s Eleven fame. Rather, I like the low-key, underrated Vegas, the kind that locals appreciate and tourists and gamblers miss out on. Off the beaten path, so to speak.

This weekend, Chris and I were in Sin City, and though we were on the Strip for a grand total of 90 minutes for lunch, we had a blast hanging out with good friends and trying out new places to eat. We lost a dollar gambling, but hey, you gotta let loose once in a while, right? ;)

I like comfortable and cozy, and I’ll always choose comfortable and cozy over glitzy and high energy…even in Las Vegas.

Mt. Fuji Winter Sightseeing

December 27, 2011

Posted in personal,travel

Happy holidays from Japan! Chris and I have been for a little over a week, spending my 28th birthday and Christmas with my parents. On my birthday (Christmas Eve!) we went on a Mt. Fuji winter sightseeing tour that is sponsored by one of the US Navy bases here. My parents and I had gone on this same tour back in 2005, but this was Chris’ first time.

Here are some of my favorite shots of the day!

My parents– my rock and 2/3 of my everything. As I was taking this picture…

Chris jumped in with a goofy smile, making this my favorite picture of the entire trip. :)

Fuji Peace Park. True to its name, the top of the hill (where the white pagoda stands) is a serene little part of the world with an AMAZING view of Mt. Fuji.

Here I am with my Kelly Moore B-Hobo (which, btw, is the best day-trip bag ever)! Don’t mind me not having a jacket on…the hill was quite steep and I got really hot!

After the Peace Park, we headed to some more sites around the base of Mt. Fuji. Here are some snacks to tide folks over:

Lake Kawaguchi, one of the five lakes that surround Mt. Fuji. This was taken from a cable car on Mt. Kachi Kachi. BEAUTIFUL view, sort of a scary 3-minute ride.

Another gorgeous view of Mt. Fuji from the top of Mt. Kachi Kachi. The weather was nice that day (cold but thankfully not windy), and the clouds looked amazing.

Japan never ceases to amaze me…and I want to share a little part of it with you, dear readers! Stay tuned in the next couple of days for a (yummy) giveaway– the first from Faye Bernoulli Photography! :)

One Busted Eye

December 21, 2011

Posted in personal

A few days after we returned from New Orleans, Chris and I battled what we were pretty sure was the flu. We both felt horrible that first weekend back, couldn’t breathe, kept coughing, and had low-grade fevers.  The kicker was on Tuesday last week, when I woke up with my right eye crusted shut and my eyelid red, puffy, and swollen (gross, I know). My first thought was, OMG I HAVE PINK EYE! I have pretty bad vision as it is, and knowing how painful a scratched cornea is, pink eye wasn’t something I wanted to deal with.

I went in for an emergency eye appointment with my optometrist, and she quickly ruled that it wasn’t pink eye (whew), but this other thing called orbital cellulitis. Huh? It’s a fancy term for an acute infection of the eye. That being said, it can get very serious and dangerous, so I’m super thankful that it didn’t get that bad. She prescribed me an oral antibiotic and an antibiotic ointment, and I was on my merry way.

I wasn’t prepared for the hilarity that was the size of the ointment tube (that’s a quarter for comparison):

It’s a small price to pay to get my eye back to normal.  Eye injuries are not fun when you’re a photographer!

For the past week, I wasn’t allowed to wear contact lenses. The sad thing is, wearing glasses always throws me off. Here are a few battle stories of my epic bad vision:

  • I first found out just how bad my vision was during an eye exam in middle school. I took off my glasses, and the optometrist asked me what I could see below the green line across the room. I looked and said, “What green line?” Upon putting my glasses back on, I realized this green line was painted on the wall, and it was about 6 feet across and at least a foot high.
  • Walking down the hall at work once, I noticed a shadowy figure walking towards me. I didn’t pay any attention until I realized it was my coworker…who had been waving at me for the entire length of the hallway.
  • This very same thing happened after my eye appointment, only it was my boss waving at me.
  • You know when you switch from contacts to glasses and the floor seems like it’s closer than it really is? This resulted in me nearly tumbling out of a bus once.
  • Waving to the wrong people because they look like someone else? Yeah, that’s happened to me a few times…and my contacts were in.

Stay healthy, everyone, especially with the holidays right around the corner! And if you have any battle stories about bad vision mishaps, feel free to leave them in the comments below. :)

Thanksgiving 2011

November 25, 2011

Posted in personal

I’m up super early because Chris had work at 5am (!). We spent Thanksgiving yesterday at our friend Steph’s house. Steph moved to San Francisco this past summer, so seeing her and everyone else was a reunion of sorts. :)

This time of year always gets me in a sort of melancholy mood, especially since my parents are on the other side of the world and the rest of our families are scattered, mostly on the west coast. Nevertheless, I have a list of blessings! In addition to life and good health; my husband, parents, and family; and a steady job and a wonderful boss and coworkers, here’s what else I’m thankful for…

  • Our fledgling business. It’s taught me a lot about what I can handle, how I like things to be run, and most importantly, that Chris and I can work on something like this…together.
  • Our awesome couples & families who have trusted us at the early stages of our business, and their never-ending encouragement (and word-of-mouth referrals!).
  • The equally awesome photographers we’ve met along the way, especially the ones who have taken the time to teach, to help, or even grab a cup of coffee.
  • Facebook and Twitter, as cliche as it sounds. But it’s hard moving across the country! Facebook and Twitter has helped me keep in touch with everyone back home and relatives all over the world.
  • Weekends off, so I can catch up on sleep and business stuff.
  • Spotify. Sometimes all you need is to blast a little rock n’ roll and you’re good to go.
  • My passport. Travel opens up your eyes to the world and I’m so thankful that I have the opportunity to go to places, especially places overseas. Bonus points: Chris has the travel bug too!
  • All the material things that aren’t necessary to survive, but make life fun nonetheless: iPhone, iPad, a car, Open Table, Yelp, WordPress, Adobe photo editing products, Amazon Prime, and Cyber Monday.
  • Baked goods, because everyone loves a cupcake (or cake pop!).
  • Free heat at our apartment. Cuz you know this cold is no joke! Likewise with the down comforter. Sooo comfy.
  • Crawling into bed at the end of a long day (under aforementioned down comforter), snuggling up next to Chris, and thanking God for another day lived.

Cheers to the 2011 holiday season, and here’s to being grateful for every blessing you have, no matter how big or small…even if it’s a cardboard box to play in. :)

Juno-sitting

July 27, 2011

Posted in personal

This week, we’re Juno-sitting! She actually has a new friend named Daisy (a 4-month-old puppy, also a whippet), but our friends took Daisy along on vacation to continue her puppy training. Juno has our undivided attention for the week and I think she’s totally loving the fact that Chris is here.

She’s getting older and you can definitely tell from these photos. She’s a really good model though…she knows the camera is pointed at her and doesn’t move. If only humans were like this! ;)

Silverball Pinball Museum

December 25, 2010

Posted in personal

Merry Christmas, everyone!! I hope you guys are all having a blast opening presents and spending time with family :)

Yesterday, we celebrated my 27th birthday. My 26th year was very good, so here’s to hoping 27 is just as great!

Chris took me to this awesome place in Asbury Park, NJ, called the Silverball Pinball Museum. Chris is a sucker for pinball machines (especially ones set to free play)– one time we were in Northern California, he took me to another pinball museum (Pacific Pinball Museum). I’m not a huge game player, but how could you not like free play pinball machines?! I got completely hooked, so when Chris mentioned going to Silverball for my birthday, I was totally on board.

I’ll start off with how we started off– with 2 chili dogs! Apparently I have the magical ability to eat a chili dog without spilling anything :P

And here we go! By the way, you’ll mostly see pictures of Chris because the ones he took are of me in such concentration that I look angry…I get way into games, haha. ;)

Lots of machines in very, very good condition.

The machine were were battling over was this 1959 Williams Pinch Hitter game. The “flippers” on each side controlled the pitch of the pinball and the bat. Your ball would fly across the baseball diamond and hit a single, double, triple, or out. Or it could catapult towards the back and get a home run. The little mechanical guys in the box under the scoreboard ran around another diamond, depending on what you hit. I think we spent about half our time at this machine…so addicting! (I’m also going to point out that I won with 12 home runs, woohoo!)

We had dinner plans with friends, so we left earlier than we wanted to…though we will definitely be back!
