wedding

The first time we met Pansy & Tim was a month before their wedding– they have such busy schedules that there was no time for an engagement session (Pansy is a medical resident, and Tim is in a PhD program for astrophysics– my name was not lost on their guests, hehe). We went over their timeline and expectations for the day, and at the end of our meeting, Pansy said, “I just want to get married already!” As she said this, she had a huge smile on her face and squeezed Tim in a bear hug.

Fast forward to their big day…it was one of the most beautiful, fun weddings we’ve ever photographed. I’m not a crier, but the love during the ceremony definitely made me sniffle! They were surrounded by their parents, families, and close friends, and even the weather cooperated. :) The Queens Botanical Gardens is a great place for a sunny spring wedding…totally worth getting covered in pollen, haha!

Pansy & Tim, words can’t express how grateful we are that you trusted us to capture your special day. We hope you enjoyed your honeymoon in Puerto Rico!

We started the day off at the Lexington Marco Hotel…

Pansy’s sisters and mom helped her into her dress.

Beautiful!

The bouquets were handmade by the bride, wedding party, and close friends, with peonies are from Pansy’s mom’s garden!

Meanwhile, Chris was with the guys getting ready. Here’s our happy and excited groom:

Three guys who weren’t quite sure how to put on a boutonniere, haha!

Got it!

Ceremony time! Look how happy Tim looks so see his bride walking down the aisle :)

So, these two had a surprise exit…to the STAR WARS THEME. It was awesome, and I love how happy they are!

Since Pansy and Tim opted not to do a first look, we shuttled them away for 10 minutes immediately after the ceremony (more on this a future post), where they really got to bask in the glow of “just married.”

A benefit of two photographers is having different angles of the same moment. Here’s my angle:

Chris’ angle:

LOVE.

We moved to another spot in the garden for some more photos…

…and then this happened! Haha! Yes, Tim started doing curls.

Back to the main garden for family formals…I have to give a shout out to everyone who was there, because family formals took us literally 25 minutes. No one, I mean, NO ONE, got in our way. All the guests stood behind us, taking their own photos. Thank you, considerate guests, from the bottom of our hearts! :)

One good looking bridal party:

I also have to give a huge THANKS to these girls here, Pansy’s high school classmates, and they are the ones who referred Pansy to us. Thank you so much, ladies!

Don’t mess with our brides ;)

The reception was a 9-course (!) Chinese banquet held at the Golden Unicorn Restaurant in Manhattan. The cake, from Momofuku Milk Bar, was amaaaazing!

A tea ceremony to honor their elder:

Traditionally, drinking tea symbolized acceptance into the family, in effect joining the two families together. In addition to red envelopes, the bride and groom were given gold jewelry. Jewelry is usually given to only the bride, so there was heartfelt applause and cheering when Pansy’s dad turned to Tim to put a gold necklace on him. :)

Also per tradition, the bride & groom, with each set of parents, goes around to each table for a toast. The energy in the room is conveyed so well in these photos!

It’s very obvious Pansy & Tim have special relationships with their parents :) The father-daughter dance definitely made me tear up.

I love these two shots of Pansy– ready to get down!

I’ll end with one of my favorite photos from the reception– everyone surrounding the bride and groom on the dance floor!

Last Friday, I had the wonderful opportunity to second shoot for an awesome Philly photographer, Vida Carson! We made the three-hour trek up to Bear Mountain, NY, in the pouring rain, laughing and talking the entire way. We had a 17-hour day ahead of us, and we.rocked.it. Kate and Dave are an incredibly sweet couple, and I’m super blessed that I was able to meet them through Vida. I was surrounded by awesome all day. :)

Check out Vida’s blog for the full post!

One of my favorite parts of the night was during the anniversary dance. These are Kate’s parents. Look how cute they are!

As if the reception couldn’t get any better (the DJ was rockin’ the house and we were singing and dancing along as we took pictures), these two guys topped it off with a Thriller dance-off.

Mel & Sam: Married

September 13, 2011

Posted in wedding

Yikes, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged! I feel like I’ve been disconnected to my main computer…first, we had to bunker down for that crazy Hurricane Irene that paid us an unwanted visit a couple of weeks ago. We did a full shutdown of electronics in preparation for a power outage (that didn’t happen, thank goodness), made sure the fridge was a little colder than normal, and had our flashlights nearby. Thankfully, we made it out with no damage to our apartment building. We  had a little bit of flooding going on in the parking lot, but it drained surprisingly quick for how much water was collecting. Crazy!

After the hurricane, we house-sat in the city for a couple of weeks. Going from a 27″ iMac to a 13″ MacBook was hard! Now I’m getting re-adjusted to the big screen. ;)

I wanted to share Mel & Sam’s photos from their church ceremony in Chatham, NJ! It was an intimate gathering of their closest family and friends, and it was really nice being able to listen to the sermon while taking photos of the ceremony. Father Bob, who officiated, told the story about the first time he visited the Caribbean and had his first coconut water and rum. He explained, “Each, on their own, is nothing special. But together, they create something extraordinary than each of them separately.” Not that Mel and Sam on their own aren’t special (because you guys are!), but he drives home the point that a couple married in the Lord is like this cocktail: extraordinary, and more importantly, inseparable.

Congrats, Mel and Sam! Thank you so much for having us document your special day.

Mel’s sisters, Jenn (left) and Charlotte. Jenn gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Maya, in May, and Charlotte is due in December with a baby girl (and Jake will be a big brother, yay). I’m incredibly jealous– they’re just glowing! :)

Sam waiting for Mel at the altar, as Mel walks in with her parents.

LOVE this shot. Dads giving away their daughters always hold a special place in my heart.

Vows and blessing…

Mr. and Mrs.! (but really, Dr. and Dr., hehe)

Mel & Sam sneak peek

August 22, 2011

Posted in Mix Tape Monday,wedding

This weekend, we visited the east coast branch of our family to celebrate Mel & Sam’s church ceremony! They were married in St. Lucia last month, and they also wanted to have their marriage blessed by the Catholic church. Here’s a sneak peek from their intimate ceremony on Saturday:

Speaking of wedding ceremonies, I heard this song for the first time recently the other week (I know, way behind). Can you say warm fuzzies?!

“I Do” by Colbie Caillat

Shoshana & Danny: Married

July 13, 2011

Posted in wedding

This is our biggest post yet! Over 4th of July weekend, we had the honor of photographing Shoshana and Danny’s wedding at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel in Center City. I was in awe of all the details…and even more so when I learned that Shoshana MADE nearly everything, or at least had something to do with designing it. Not only was it a reflection of her talents as an artist, it made the whole wedding that much more personal and special.

Congratulations, Shoshana and Danny! I hope you two are having a blast in Mexico. I’ll be sad to see you off to Shanghai in a few weeks, but I’m forever thankful that you chose us to document your big day.

Smart bride– she wore flats!

While I was photographing Shoshana getting ready, I saw a bunch of empty Hank’s Root Beer bottles on one of the tables. It turns out that Danny LOVES this stuff, so I had to do something fun!

Off to Broad Street for portraits with City Hall!

I love their smiles here :)

In Jewish tradition, the ketubah is signed before the ceremony and once signed and blessed by the rabbi, the couple is officially married.

Did I mention how awesome Shoshana is with details? She painstakingly carved their ketubah with their wedding seal, Star of David, dragons, and phoenixes. It. Was. AMAZING.

L’chaim!

Off to the ceremony…

While it’s tradition for the bride to circle her groom 7 times, Shoshana and Danny circled each other 3 times.

Breaking the glass– otherwise known as “the last time the groom puts his foot down” ;)

Husband and wife!

More details created by Shoshana…

They hired a live band, EBE Miami, who was seriously the best live band I’ve ever heard. It was hard to not bounce around and sing along as we were working the room. While we waited for the grand entrance, we caught this:

This has to be one of my favorite pictures of the night– during the hora! So much fun and EVERYONE, young and old, was on the dance floor!

During the reception, Shoshana and Danny had a traditional Chinese tea ceremony to honor their elders.

It was followed by the lion dance by the Penn Lions troupe!

Mmmm, desserts!

Danny’s groomsman, Michael, gave the funniest toast about how they met in Chinese school about 20 years ago. Michael didn’t learn a lick of Chinese, and when his parents asked him what he took away, he said “Danny.” Awww!

That awesome live band, EBE Miami! They brought so much energy to the reception that Chris and I were still singing after the wedding.

Our last shot, another one of my favorites.

This weekend, we had the honor of shooting Shoshana and Danny’s wedding at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel in Center City. They were surrounded by their closest family and friends in a celebration of their love for each other and their cultural and religious backgrounds. It was absolutely beautiful!

Here’s a sneak peek for ya :)

And since I totally forgot it was Mix Tape Monday yesterday, here is the song Danny and their bridal party walked in to, “Lucky” by Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat.

Christine & Christian: Married!

May 27, 2011

Posted in wedding

As I type this, Christine and Christian are gearing up for their engagement party, where they will make the announcement that they eloped this past weekend in New York.

Wait, what?!

That’s right, they tied the knot! Originally, they were coming to the east coast to visit us before Chris rolled into rotations. It was later on that they decided to bite the bullet and get married in a very intimate ceremony– and by intimate I mean just the two of them, the officiant, Chris, and me!

Their story begins in high school, where Christian was a big football star. Christine says she had a huge crush on him, but he never noticed her until college. Along the way, she dated his cousin while he dated her sister’s friend. One day, Christine received a message from him on MySpace asking if she remembered him. (Duh, how could she forget?!) One message led to another, one non-date led to a real date (and another and another), relationships with other people ended, and finally, the timing was right, and they were a couple.

When Christian proposed, Christine cried. That’s the kind of love they have– the kind that is full of raw emotion and unashamed to show itself in full force. Everything from their first look to their first kiss as husband and wife was just overflowing with love. It takes a lot to make me cry, but just seeing how they looked at each other during the ceremony made me tear up. I’m so glad they chose us to be a part of their big day. Not only were we the photographers, we also signed their marriage license as witnesses to their union, which was such an honor.

Congratulations, Christine and Christian!

Since Christine wouldn’t get to walk down an aisle, she and I kicked the guys out of the suite as she got dressed. They did their first look in the lobby of the San Carlos Hotel (which, by the way, we totally recommend).

They decided to have their ceremony at the High Line, and Chris and I were very enthusiastic– we LOVE this place! Aside from the occasional jogger or early riser, we were completely alone.

The bouquet and boutonniere were made by my good friend Binh of BeauFlora. She did a great job, and Christine was in love with her bouquet!

For after these vows, you shall say to the world, this is my husband, this is my wife…

RAWR.
