Your bike’s gearing is very carefully considered by the engineers who designed it. The VStar 250 is not a very powerful bike and is going to struggle trying to pull such a high tall final drive ratio.
29/11/2005 · I belive the biggest reason most people tend to change the front sprocket rather than the rear is twofold. Simplicity and cost. It’s a lot cheaper to replace the front sprocket and it’s easier to change as well. You are also less likely to need to change the number of links in the chain when changing only a front sprocket.

I’m using a 17/42 setup just like Larry’s. I did notice that drop in torque that you had mentioned. You might want to consider a KN filter if you haven’t added one already. I did notice a slight increase in power after the sprocket change when I added the air filter.

I just changed (from 17/40) to 17/38 sprockets and drove it to work today with 17/38 for the first time. As expected, it ”moves up” the speed range for each gear. If you used to go 35 to 50 mph in 4th gear, for example, now you would go 40 to 55 mph.

Editor’s Note: The distance from the countershaft sprocket to the rear axle is fixed and doesn’t change. What does change is the “hypotenuse” formed by the top and bottom chain run as the swingarm moves up and down with the suspension. This also puts tension on the top run of the chain, which in turn affects the sag on the bottom run.

Don’t. The stock sprockets are 16 front and 45 rear. What you’re proposing is a large change in the final drive ratio, going from 2.813:1 to 2.294:1. Your bike’s gearing is very carefully considered by the engineers who designed it. The VStar 250 is not a very powerful bike and is going to struggle trying to pull such a high tall final drive ratio.

29/11/2005 · I belive the biggest reason most people tend to change the front sprocket rather than the rear is twofold. Simplicity and cost. It’s a lot cheaper to replace the front sprocket and it’s easier to change as well. You are also less likely to need to change the number of links in the chain when changing only a front sprocket.

Editor’s Note: The distance from the countershaft sprocket to the rear axle is fixed and doesn’t change. What does change is the “hypotenuse” formed by the top and bottom chain run as the swingarm moves up and down with the suspension. I’m using a 17/42 setup just like Larry’s. I did notice that drop in torque that you had mentioned. You might want to consider a KN filter if you haven’t added one already. I did notice a slight increase in power after the sprocket change when I added the air filter.

There is more room to work on the front cylinder than on the rear cylinder. I’m using a 17/42 setup just like Larry’s. I did notice that drop in torque that you had mentioned. You might want to consider a KN filter if you haven’t added one already. I did notice a slight increase in power after the sprocket change when I added the air filter.
I just changed (from 17/40) to 17/38 sprockets and drove it to work today with 17/38 for the first time. As expected, it ”moves up” the speed range for each gear. If you used to go 35 to 50 mph in 4th gear, for example, now you would go 40 to 55 mph.

Editor’s Note: The distance from the countershaft sprocket to the rear axle is fixed and doesn’t change. What does change is the “hypotenuse” formed by the top and bottom chain run as the swingarm moves up and down with the suspension. This also puts tension on the top run of the chain, which in turn affects the sag on the bottom run.

There is more room to work on the front cylinder than on the rear cylinder. For this reason, people sometimes find it easier to start with the front cylinder while learning how to adjust the valves then to move on to the more difficult rear cylinder.
